NURS 246 Senior Seminar: Transition to Practice3 credits This course is designed to facilitate the transition of new nursing graduates into professional practice, focusing on the five broad competencies essential for all health professionals as outlined in the Institute of Medicine (IOM) report on health professional education. The competencies include delivering patient-centered care, working in interdisciplinary teams, employing evidence-based practice, applying quality improvement, and utilizing informatics. Through a combination of theoretical instruction, and practical experience gained in the paired transition-to-practice practicum course, students are prepared to meet the challenges of modern healthcare delivery.
Prerequisites: NURS 241 , NURS 242 , and NURS 243
Corequisites: NURS 244 and NURS 245
Course Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Discuss holistic, patient-centered care that meets the diverse needs of patients
- Discuss effective communication and collaboration within interdisciplinary healthcare teams
- Apply evidence-based practice principles to clinical decision-making and patient care case studies
- Describe quality improvement methodologies that enhance patient safety and care quality
- Discuss informatics tools and systems that support patient care and healthcare delivery
- Understand the transition from education to employment as a Registered Nurse
