NURS 243 Leadership and Nursing Practice2-3 credits This course is designed to equip nursing students with essential leadership skills needed to thrive in the dynamic and challenging healthcare environment emphasizing the development of critical thinking, effective communication, conflict resolution, patient advocacy, time management & prioritization, delegation, quality improvement, and professional growth strategies tailored for those at the beginning of their nursing careers.
Prerequisites: All NURS courses in previous quarter
Corequisites: All NURS courses within same quarter
Course Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Locate the CBA, RCW, WAC and other legal documents which define the workplace
- Understand and be able to apply these regulations
- Identify and address ethical and safety issues in pediatric nursing practice
- Describe how principles of leadership and management can be applied in entry-level nursing
- Identify the relationship between nursing process, problem solving, and decision making
- Identify the ethical & legal parameters of RN practice in relation to care elements & documentation
- Identify strategies for effective communication and dealing with intra and interpersonal conflict
- Describe the nurse’s role in relation to regulatory, fiscal, and organizational issues
- Provide leadership to effectively collaborate with client, family, the interdisciplinary care team, and systems administration
- Identify the operational and legal aspects related to delegation and unlicensed assistive personnel
