MEDA 130 Admin: Billing & Coding5 credits Introduction to medical coding and billing procedures including insurance coverage, terminology, payment systems, legal and ethical issues, healthcare compliance, and collections. As well as review of various types of health insurance plans, such as state, federal, and managed care. Students will learn the insurance claims processing cycle, billing systems, and required documentation
Prerequisites: MEDA 116 and MEDA 121
Course Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Identify the current procedural and diagnostic coding systems, including Healthcare Common Procedure Coding Systems II (HCPCS Level II)
- Identify the effects of upcoding and down coding
- Define medical necessity
- Perform procedural coding
- Perform diagnostic coding
- Utilize medical necessity guidelines
