EDUC 291 Field Experience and Capstone

4 credits
In this course students will reflect upon and demonstrate knowledge of the skills addressed throughout the paraeducator program to summarize their learning.

Prerequisites: EDUC 191  

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate standards of conduct consistent with laws, regulations, policies and procedures pertinent to paraeducators
  • Explore appropriate positive behavior support and teaching strategies to assist students as they engage in learning experiences and align work with the special education team decisions
  • Demonstrate culturally responsive communication skills and build partnerships while working with linguistically diverse groups of students, families, and staff
  • Recognize and support the role of the inclusive and culturally responsive classroom environment as a necessary element to support optimal learning opportunities for all children
  • Document observations and data related to behavior and educational plans and communicate the results with the special education team
  • Demonstrate appropriate de-escalation techniques, and responsibilities for responding to unsafe behaviors in alignment with state laws and district policies
  • Analyze the impact staff behaviors and environment have on behavior, and practice selfreflection to determine possible approaches to behaviors
  • Summarize learning experiences and professional development related to the role of a paraeducator and future goals
  • Assist with implementation of the tiered supports in the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS)
