EDUC 191 Practicum I4 credits This course will include observing and assisting general education and special education teachers implementing appropriate strategies based on the individual unique needs of learners. The coursework will also include application and reflection related to the standards in the WA State Paraeducator Basic Competencies.
Prerequisites: EDUC 175
Course Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Assist in providing instruction that meets the needs of diverse learners
- Monitor the progress and implementation of the behavior plan, and other special education services
- Foster and promote culturally responsive, equity-based, and inclusive learning environments for each student
- Demonstrate effective communication skills with students, families and staff
- Analyze and reflect on WA State Paraeducator Basic Competencies to improve practice in educational settings
- Discuss scenarios and identify solutions for challenging situations that may occur while working in the role of paraeducator
- Explore the function of behaviors and the underlying factors influencing behaviors
- Examine and apply de-escalation techniques appropriately
- Describe the role of class support and 1:1 support of a student in all school environments
- Compare and contrast the tiers of support in the Multi-Tiered Systems of Support
