ECED 465 Collaborative Approaches to Promoting Health and Development

5 credits
In this course, students will analyze features and approaches related to collaborative partnerships with families and communities that support young children’s optimal development. Students will also research the influences that impact development and implement strategies to promote children’s well-being including trauma-informed care, culturally responsive teaching, nutrition, mindfulness, and a focus on the inner needs and drives of children from a developmental perspective. 

Prerequisites: ECED 435  and ECED 445  

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Promote the development and well-being of the whole child in a culturally responsive manner
  • Examine developmental aspects related to children’s inner needs and drives
  • Analyze risk and protective factors that can impact children’s growth and development
  • Implement equitable and inclusive teaching strategies that relate to mindfulness, trauma-informed care, resilience, and nourishment
  • Design multifaceted approaches to support children and families through crisis situations, major life events, and/or toxic stress
  • Analyze ethical dilemmas and design culturally responsive approaches to situations related to the unique developmental and health needs of children and families in early learning settings
  • Demonstrate effective communication and build respectful relationships with diverse groups of children, families, staff, and community agencies 
  • Create family resources and identify community resources to match the health and well-being needs of children and families  
  • Facilitate discussions with families in a conference setting and provide relevant community resources and referral information
