ECED 435 Leadership, Advocacy, and Program Development5 credits In this course, students will examine approaches to leadership and key components of early learning program development. Students will also discuss ways to engage in advocacy to promote equity, diversity, and inclusion-based initiatives. This course will also analyze the NAEYC (National Association for the Education of Young Children) Code of Ethical Conduct and key ECE position statements and guidelines to promote professional development, design ethical approaches, and discuss perspectives related to ECE.
Prerequisites: ECED 300 and ECED 310
Course Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Analyze and apply the NAEYC Code of Ethical Conduct and other position statements to professional roles and scenarios that occur in early learning settings
- Engage in informed advocacy for diverse groups of children, families, community, and the profession by skillfully articulating and advocating for sound professional practices, inclusion-based initiatives, equity-based approaches, and public policies
- Demonstrate reflective practice and examine multiple perspectives in early childhood education related to leadership and program development
- Examine professional resources and research related to program development
- Design and modify program procedures and policies to enhance communication, implement culturally responsive care, and improve health and safety for children and families
- Analyze business plans, monitor trends, and design solutions for fiscal issues, enrollment, and staff retention/recruitment challenges
- Demonstrate leadership skills in the early childhood field to think strategically, build consensus, create change, and effectively collaborate with and mentor others to have a positive influence on outcomes for children, families, and the profession
