The Initial Paraeducator certificate prepares students to work in public school settings. The content in the certificate aligns with the Washington State Recommended Core Competencies for Paraeducators.
Initial Paraeducator certificate graduates will:
- explain the variety of roles and responsibilities paraeducators have in the delivery of educational services
- examine the history, beliefs, purpose, and current issues related to education
- identify and apply techniques for motivating students, working with disruptive behaviors, and dealing with challenges that occur in classrooms.
- develop effective partnerships with school staff and the special education team
- demonstrate respectful, ethical, and professional approaches to navigate complex issues in education
- apply components of the Washington State Core Competencies for Paraeducators to work in educational settings
Lake Washington Institute of Technology does not offer every course each quarter. It is the student’s responsibility to consult the Class Schedule and work out an individual schedule with an advisor. Any developmental coursework a student may be required to complete may increase the program length.
