Students who successfully complete required courses in the Social Science distribution area will be able to demonstrate the college-wide learning outcome of Cultural Humility. Cultural Humility is the ability to practice lifelong learning and critical self-reflection in order to understand one’s own cultural identity and its impact on being open to and supporting the cultures of others. It includes the following learning objectives:
Lifelong Learning
- Describe and demonstrate ways to learn about own cultural identity
- Describe and demonstrate ways to learn about the cultures of others
Critical Self-Reflection
- Identify own cultural beliefs and values and how those influence actions
- Investigate and address own assumptions and prejudices about other cultures
Recognizing and Challenging Power Imbalances
- Analyze power imbalances present in their field of study/industry
- Develop ways to minimize or eliminate power imbalances and/or their potential negative impacts
- Demonstrate listening skills and the centering of those being served in the provision of services
Institutional Accountability
- Assess institutions, systems, and organizations with which they engage for cultural competency
- Identify and describe how to affect institutional change within their field/industry
- Develop advocacy strategies to be able to hold institutions accountable to those they serve or those impacted by their services
