The Behavioral and Social Services AAS degree provides a generalist education for employment in a wide variety of service agencies. The student will develop the professional values, skills, and knowledge to assist individuals and groups with personal, interpersonal, and situational problems.
In this occupational area students will be prepared for employment as case managers in rehabilitation, employment services, corrections, educational programs, and community based organizations serving youth, seniors, and individuals with disabilities.
Behavioral and Social Services AAS degree graduates will:
- enter a wide range of entry level positions in the human services field
- transfer to baccalaureate degree programs
- assist clients in developing alternative strategies and informed choices for solving interpersonal problems
- interview, assess, and appropriately refer clients to community resources
- communicate effectively with clients and co-workers, verbally and in writing
- protect client rights
- facilitate client groups and effectively resolve conflicts
- adhere to a professional code of ethics
- demonstrate communication, critical thinking, cultural humility, information literacy, and teamwork skills
- meet Humanities , Quantitative Reasoning , Social Science , and Written Communication general education distribution area outcomes
Lake Washington Institute of Technology does not offer every course each quarter. It is the student’s responsibility to consult the Class Schedule and work out an individual schedule with an advisor. Any developmental coursework a student may be required to complete may increase the program length.

Recommended Course Sequence
The courses listed below are a suggested sequence; as long as prerequisites are met, courses may be taken in a different order.

Choose 22 credits from the following courses based on career and educational goals.
General Education Requirements - 20 Credits
Diversity and Social Justice Requirement
Within the degree requirements, students must complete a 3-5 credit course that meets the college’s Diversity and Social Justice (DSJ) requirement. DSJ courses are designated in the college schedule and are designed to meet other general education or technical requirements simultaneous to meeting the DSJ requirement (e.g., ENGL& 101 with the DSJ attribute meets both the ENGL& 101 requirement and the DSJ requirement).
Note: Not all sections of a course meet the DSJ requirement. Students should review the class information to ensure the class section includes “course attributes: meets diversity requirement.”

Students who have taken a DSJ class in a previous certificate or degree, do not have to take another DSJ class.
