DSGN 102 Design Principles5 credits This course is intended for students enrolled in Design and User Centered Design. In addition to identifying the principles and elements of design, students will gain additional training on typography, layout, and grid systems. This introductory course explores the origins, concepts, and processes applied to traditional and contemporary design.
Prerequisites: ABED 40 or AHSE 56 (or placement into MATH 87 or AHSE 66 or higher) and ABED 46 (or placement into ENGL 93 or higher)
Course Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Incorporate and identify the principles of 2D design (balance, unity, emphasis, rhythm, etc.,) and examine how they are used in various design solutions
- Incorporate and identify the elements of 2D design (line, shape, value, color, texture, etc.,) and examine how they apply to design solutions
- Demonstrate a basic understanding of value, color schemes, and color attributes through class assignments and projects
- Identify Gestalt principles and how they apply to the design
- Explain the design process including problem identification, the creative brief, creating iterations and identifying multiple solutions, presenting concepts, layouts, and providing deliverables
- Describe how historical design movements continue to impact contemporary design work
- Identify basic classifications of typography
- Illustrate how hierarchy, contrast, alignment, and color apply to typography
- Identify the basic principles of grid systems and layout design in both static (print) and responsive (web) applications
College-Wide Learning Outcomes This course teaches to the college-wide learning outcome of Information Literacy, the ability to recognize when information is needed, to choose the appropriate tools to locate the required information, and to effectively gather and evaluate the information.
