INTL 37 Intermediate Academic Support5 credits This course, for non-native speakers of English who are international students, builds upon and reinforces the academic skills taught in INTL 40 and INTL 50 . This course focuses on developing more complex academic skills in grammar, writing, reading, and speaking.
Prerequisites: Appropriate score on IEP Placement test, completion of INTL 30 or ELL 30 , or instructor permission.
Corequisites: INTL 40 or INTL 50 (or ELL 40 or ELL 50 )
Course Outcomes Upon completion of this course students will be able to:
- Use pre-writing techniques (graphic organizers and outlines) to brainstorm and organize ideas for writing
- Write paragraphs and simple essays in a variety of organizational patterns using relevant topic sentences, appropriate support, and concluding sentences
- Write sentences using appropriate syntax, punctuation, and showing control of intermediate level- grammar with 75% accuracy.
- Make edits to grammar, punctuation, spelling, and sentence structure
- Use checklists for peer and self- editing in writing
- Read intermediate- level texts and identify topic sentences, main ideas, and details
- Apply reading strategies (context, dictionary usage, etc.) to determine meaning of unfamiliar vocabulary
- Draw conclusions, make inferences, and make predictions in intermediate-level discourse in a variety of contexts (text, conversations, short lectures, etc.)
- Use speech- making techniques and presentation strategies to give effective presentations
- Participate in and lead group discussions
