DHYG 412 Advanced Dental Hygiene Theory V3 credits The fifth in a series of seven linked courses to build upon fundamental concepts of dental hygiene and incorporate complex dental hygiene theory, science, and practice management for patients with a higher degree of difficulty and periodontal involvement.
Prerequisites: All Quarter 5 DHYG BAS courses
Corequisites: All Quarter 6 DHYG BAS courses
Course Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Analyze dental hygiene theory and application of complex treatment outcomes
- Identify patients who would benefit from smoking cessation and apply learned protocol
- Identify instruments that may break and apply proper technique for the potential of a broken instrument tip
- Implement proper prevention techniques and oral hygiene recommendations for patients with prosthetics and orthodontia
- Explain CDT (Current Dental Terminology) codes and discuss their use
- Assess for dentinal hypersensitivity and formulate a protocol for treatment
- Prepare for National, Regional and State Boards needed for licensure
- Analyze ethical principles and apply them to the practice of dental hygiene
Program Outcomes This course teaches to the following program outcome:
- be prepared to successfully complete all licensing exams required to practice in Washington State and obtain an entry-level position as a dental hygienist
