DHYG 258 Oral Disease Prevention2 credits This course introduces students to basic principles of oral health education and disease prevention. Students will learn concepts to make evidence-based decisions regarding oral hygiene techniques and products to recommend to patients to prevent and manage dental diseases.
Prerequisites: All Quarter 3 DHYG BAS courses
Corequisites: All Quarter 4 DHYG BAS courses
Course Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Describe assessment of dental deposits and stain
- Describe methods of dental caries management by risk assessment
- Describe and demonstrate the use of various oral hygiene aids and preventive products
- Describe types of fluoride therapies, their mechanism of action, indications, and alternative choices for caries management
- Describe the process of dentinal hypersensitivity and its treatment options
- Develop and communicate an individualized patient oral hygiene care plan
- Discuss sustainable Health Behavior Change
Program Outcomes This course teaches to the following program outcome:
- be prepared to successfully complete all licensing exams required to practice in Washington State and obtain an entry-level position as a dental hygienist
