NURS 225 Nursing of Children

3-4 credits
This course provides an in-depth exploration of the theoretical foundations and principles of pediatric nursing. Emphasizing growth and development, family-centered care, and the management of common pediatric health conditions, this course equips students with the knowledge necessary to understand the unique needs of infants, children, and adolescents. Through lectures, case studies, and evidence-based discussions, students will develop a comprehensive understanding of pediatric nursing concepts and the role of the nurse in promoting the health and well-being of pediatric populations.  

Prerequisites: All NURS courses in previous quarter

Corequisites: All NURS courses within same quarter

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate a thorough understanding of growth and development theories and their application to pediatric nursing
  • Identify and address ethical and safety issues in pediatric nursing practice
  • Discuss health promotion and disease prevention plans tailored to pediatric populations 
  • Utilize effective communication strategies for interacting with pediatric patients and their families 
  • Describe the pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment of disorders and disease processes for the pediatric clients  
  • Utilize the nursing process and clinical judgment model as a framework for safe, holistic, and family-centered care of pediatric clients 
  • Discuss management of care, patient goals, and client/family education considerations for disorders and disease processes for the pediatric client
  • Apply critical thinking and clinical judgment skills to analyze and interpret pediatric case study scenarios, demonstrating the ability to prioritize interventions, anticipate complications, provide evidenced-based care, and adapt nursing care plans based on patient responses
