NURS 222 Nursing & the Childbearing Family Practicum2-3 credits This clinical course provides nursing students with hands-on experience in the care of childbearing families, focusing on the prenatal, intrapartum, postpartum, and neonatal periods. Emphasizing the application of theoretical knowledge to practice, students will develop essential clinical skills, critical thinking, and professional behaviors necessary for maternal and newborn nursing. The course integrates family-centered care, cultural competence, and evidence-based interventions to support the health and well-being of mothers, infants, and families.
Prerequisites: All NURS courses in previous quarter
Corequisites: All NURS courses within same quarter
Course Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Demonstrate professional behavior and accountability consistent with ANA code of ethics and program and facility responsibilities of nursing
- Demonstrate effective communication skills working with clients, family members, interdisciplinary team members, and faculty through verbal, written, and electronic mediums
- Identify and address ethical and safety issues for the childbearing family
- Apply critical thinking and clinical judgment skills, demonstrating the ability to prioritize interventions, anticipate complications, provide evidenced-based care, and adapt nursing care plans based on the childbearing client responses
- Demonstrate proficiency in implementing the role of the nurse providing holistic care for the childbearing family with regard to timely, safe, ethical, inclusive, individualized, equitable, effective, and financially responsible care within the student nurse scope of practice
- Develop client goals and client/family education considerations for the childbearing family
- Demonstrate effective use of information systems & technology to support and document the delivery of quality care provided to the childbearing family
