NURS 221 Nursing & the Childbearing Family3 credits This course offers an in-depth exploration of the theoretical foundations and principles of nursing care for the childbearing family. Focusing on the continuum from preconception through the postpartum period, this course equips students with the knowledge necessary to understand the physiological, psychological, and social aspects of childbearing. Emphasizing evidence-based practice, family-centered care, and cultural competence, students will develop a comprehensive understanding of the nursing role in supporting the health and well-being of mothers, infants, and families.
Prerequisites: All NURS courses in previous quarter
Corequisites: All NURS courses within same quarter
Course Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Demonstrate a thorough understanding of the physiological and psychological aspects of the childbearing process
- Identify and address ethical and safety issues for the childbearing family
- Discuss effective communication strategies for interacting with members of the childbearing family
- Describe the pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, pharmacologic and non-pharmacologic treatment of the childbearing family
- Analyze the role of the nurse in supporting normal and complicated pregnancies and deliveries
- Discuss management of care, patient goals, and client/family education considerations for the childbearing family
- Apply critical thinking and clinical judgment skills to analyze and interpret preconception, prenatal, intrapartum, and postpartum case study scenarios, demonstrating the ability to prioritize interventions, anticipate complications, provide evidenced-based care, and adapt nursing care plans based on patient responses
