NURS 117 Skills Lab I

2-3 credits

This course provides nursing students with a comprehensive foundation in essential nursing skills, emphasizing the integration of evidence-based practice, safety, communication, functional ability, caring interventions, and information technology concepts across the adult lifespan. Students will develop the competencies necessary to deliver safe, high-quality, patient-centered care to diverse populations.

Prerequisites: BIOL& 241, BIOL& 242, BIOL& 260, CHEM& 121, any CMST& course, ENGL& 101, MATH& 146, NUTR& 101, and PSYC& 200

Corequisites: All NURS courses within same quarter

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

Demonstrate effective communication skills through verbal, written, and electronic mediums
Demonstrate professional behavior and accountability consistent with ANA code of ethics and program and responsibilities of nursing
Demonstrate competence in safety measures for patient encounters
Demonstrate competence in performing hand hygiene and obtaining vital signs
Demonstrate competence in medication math
Demonstrate competence in ADDD use and medication administration
Demonstrate competence in NG placement, gastric medications, and enteral feeds
Demonstrate competence in IV assessment, IV fluids, and IV medication administration
Demonstrate competence in oxygen delivery & performing sterile procedures
Demonstrate the skills of proper PPE use, mobility, transfers, restraints, hygiene, specimen collection, ostomy care, and tracheostomy care
Demonstrate effective use of information systems & technology to support and document the delivery of quality care
