NURS 116 Communication Processes in Nursing

2 credits
This course is an introduction to the principles of therapeutic communication and techniques for use with clients, families, and co-workers. Students identify patterns of communication and explore common barriers to safe and effective communication. 

Prerequisites: All NURS courses in previous quarter

Corequisites: All NURS courses within same quarter

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Use personal communication skills to advocate for client and self
  • Develop skills for effective communication with interdisciplinary healthcare team members, including use of the SBAR and Team STEPPS models/strategies
  • Utilize patient-centered communication strategies to address diverse patient populations  
  • Identify and employ strategies for resolving conflicts in healthcare settings
  • Demonstrate de-escalation techniques in challenging communication situations
