NURS 111 Nursing Foundations3-4 credits A course introducing nursing students to the foundation of the nursing profession through the exploration of the healthcare delivery system, nursing roles, and the legal and ethical bases of nursing practice. Fundamental evidence-based clinical nursing care, along with health promotion and disease prevention concepts, will be introduced to explore the nursing role in maintaining quality and safety in healthcare. Students will explore the nurse’s role as a change agent in planning and delivering holistic, person-centered care with cultural humility.
Prerequisites: BIOL& 241 , BIOL& 242 , BIOL& 260 , CHEM& 121 , any CMST& course, ENGL& 101 , MATH& 146 , NUTR& 101 , and PSYC& 200
Corequisites: All NURS courses within same quarter
Course Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Discuss the evolving role of nursing within contemporary health systems and the nursing role in maintaining quality and safety in healthcare
- Identify healthcare team members, describe their roles, and explore the role of the nurse in various settings
- Understand the legal and ethical elements of documentation, confidentiality, and patient rights, and describe the ethical and legal concepts foundational to professional nursing
- Demonstrate effective communication skills with diverse clients, families, and interdisciplinary teams, contributing to a positive team environment and quality healthcare delivery
- Apply the nursing care process to provide safe, competent, and holistic person-centered care using appropriate tools and technologies
- Practice technical and information literacy to maintain and provide evidence-based nursing care
- Describe the impact of social determinants of health on health equity and apply health promotion concepts in caring for clients across the lifespan from diverse backgrounds in various healthcare settings
