NURS 107 Nursing Assistant Theory7 credits This course provides a comprehensive overview of the essential principles and practices required for effective nursing assistant care. Students will explore foundational concepts in patient care, including communication, hygiene, nutrition, mobility, behavioral health, dementia, developmental disabilities, and safety. Emphasis will be placed on the role of the nursing assistant in various healthcare settings, including hospitals, long-term care facilities, and home health environments. Through a blend of lectures, case studies, and interactive discussions, students will develop critical thinking skills and gain the knowledge necessary to support the physical, emotional, and social well-being of patients.
Prerequisites: Completion of ABED 40 or AHSE 56 (or placement into MATH 87 or AHSE 66 or higher) and ENGL 93 (or placement into ENGL 99 or higher)
Corequisites: NURS 108 and NURS 109
Course Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Understand the Role of the Nursing Assistant: Articulate the responsibilities and scope of practice for nursing assistants in diverse healthcare settings
- Demonstrate Effective Communication Skills: Employ verbal and non-verbal communication techniques to interact compassionately with patients, families, and healthcare team members
- Provide Basic Patient Care: Perform fundamental nursing assistant tasks, including bathing, grooming, feeding, and assisting with mobility, while ensuring patient comfort and dignity
- Recognize and Respond to Patient Needs: Identify common physical and emotional needs of patients and apply appropriate interventions to address those needs
- Ensure Patient Safety: Implement safety protocols and infection control measures to protect patients and prevent accidents in various healthcare environments
- Understand Ethical and Legal Considerations: Discuss the ethical and legal standards that guide nursing assistant practice, including patient confidentiality and informed consent
- Promote Patient Wellness: Advocate for the holistic care of patients by recognizing the importance of nutrition, exercise, and mental health in the overall well-being of individuals
- Develop Critical Thinking Skills: Analyze case studies to enhance problem-solving skills and make informed decisions regarding patient care
