AHSE 51 Contemporary History and World Problems

3-5 credits

This contextualized history course examines a contemporary history and world problems in depth. This course prepares the student to pass a high school equivalency examination and meet the history requirements of Washington State High School Diploma.

Prerequisites: A minimum of 221 on the CASAS Reading Assessment and a writing sample.

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

Investigate the development of civilization in Africa, Asia, Europe, and the Americas and explore how societies change over time
Analyze technological, political, social, and economic revolutions in world history
Explore the conflicts between nations to the present day and analyze the challenges facing the modern world
Describe cultural characteristics of societies over time and investigate the effects of technological innovation on economic and social change
Engage in writing in response to texts, concepts, and scenarios
Use research skills to access, interpret, and apply information from multiple sources
Identify, analyze, and evaluate the decisions and actions of significant events that have shaped modern history
Engage in thoughtful dialogue with their peers and share well informed opinions related to historical events
Work effectively both individually and collaboratively on historical projects
Utilize technology to further enhance and develop their understanding of modern historical events
