ABED 81 Social Emotional Communication3 credits This course contextualizes reading, writing, speaking, and listening with social emotional learning skills. Upper-level ELL students build self-awareness and communication skills that help prepare them to transition into college-level classes. The course encourages students to learn with and from their peers by experiencing multicultural group dynamics.
Prerequisites: ELL 65 (or equivalent CASAS placement)
Corequisites: ABED 24 or higher
Course Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Identify and use strategies to develop effective communication skills
- Describe and employ techniques to build strong relationships with peers
- Identify and practice emotional and social skills
- Acknowledge and explain cultural differences in communication
- Compare and contrast differences in one-on-one communication and group communication
- Build self-awareness of emotions and internal conflict
- Demonstrate college and career readiness (CCR) skills aligned with the national CCR standards
