ABED 81 Social Emotional Communication

3 credits

This course contextualizes reading, writing, speaking, and listening with social emotional learning skills. Upper-level ELL students build self-awareness and communication skills that help prepare them to transition into college-level classes. The course encourages students to learn with and from their peers by experiencing multicultural group dynamics.

Prerequisites: ELL 65 (or equivalent CASAS placement)

Corequisites: ABED 24 or higher

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

Identify and use strategies to develop effective communication skills
Describe and employ techniques to build strong relationships with peers
Identify and practice emotional and social skills
Acknowledge and explain cultural differences in communication
Compare and contrast differences in one-on-one communication and group communication
Build self-awareness of emotions and internal conflict
Demonstrate college and career readiness (CCR) skills aligned with the national CCR standards
