EDUC 230 Supporting Social-Emotional Development3 credits This course will examine the principles and theories related to promoting social, emotional and behavioral competencies. The course will also explore strategies that promote social interactions and social-emotional skills while fostering equitable and inclusive learning environments for diverse learners.
Prerequisites: EDUC& 115
Course Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Explore components of social-emotional learning including self-awareness, selfmanagement, responsible decision making, relationship skills, and social awareness
- Describe techniques for fostering and facilitating safe, inclusive, and respectful communication between peers
- Examine social situations to determine the appropriate and safe interventions that will encourage peer problem solving/negotiation and diminish detrimental behaviors (physically unsafe and/or bullying)
- Identify individual needs and implement strategies that promote social-emotional development related to executive functioning/self-regulation, decision-making, calming, self-advocacy, mindfulness and dealing with emotions
- Utilize observations to determine influences on social interactions and apply strategies to promote social interaction based on individual abilities
