EDUC 246 Working with Multilingual Learners

4 credits
This course will include an overview of legal requirements related to supporting multilingual learners, exploration of models used for teaching, impact of cultural issues, and strategies for working with diverse families. Specific language and literacy instructional approaches that effectively support multilingual learners will be discussed.

Prerequisites: EDUC& 101  

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Explore concepts, approaches and terms used in the educational system related to culturally and linguistically diverse students
  • Identify key laws and legislation at the Federal and State level addressing education of students who come from multilingual environments
  • Examine the social emotional impact of language acquisition stages within the developmental continuum
  • Describe strategies and best practices in working with multilingual learners and families in the educational setting
  • Identify and apply language and literacy instructional strategies that support multilingual learners during daily activities
  • Examine disproportionality related to multilingual learners in educational systems including special education, discipline referrals, and gifted/talented programs
