EDUC 165 Professional Skills and Communication4 credits This course will explore communication skills necessary for working effectively as a team member. The course will also discuss professional skills related to ethics, conduct, communication, confidentiality, and use of technology.
Prerequisites: ABED 40 or AHSE 56 (or placement into MATH 87 or AHSE 66 or higher) and ABED 46 (or placement into ENGL 93 or higher)
Course Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Demonstrate the use of clear and effective communication approaches in culturally responsive ways when working with teams
- Understand the stages of team development and how effective teams support student learning
- Examine the components of effective feedback and how feedback can be utilized to support student growth and teaming efforts
- Describe ways to apply conflict resolution strategies with students and team members
- Explore communication styles related to personalities, culture, gender, and race that can impact communication between team members and with students
- Demonstrate professional skills related to conduct, ethics, and confidentiality
- Utilize different forms of technology and understand the paraeducator’s role in maintaining security, privacy and appropriate use of media platforms
