AHSE 71 HS+ Civics and Government3 credits This course prepares students to meet the civics requirements of the Washington State High School Diploma.
Prerequisites: A minimum of 221 on the CASAS Reading Assessment and a writing sample
Program Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Organize a timeline of events leading to the development of the United States Government
- Examine the functions of the three branches of the federal government and how they provide a system of checks and balances for the government as a whole
- Discuss the significance of three specific Amendments included in the Bill of Rights
- Identify and be able to name the current Senator, State Representatives, and Senators of Washington State and the political parties they represent
- Identify and be able to name the current United States President, Vice President, and the Speaker of the House and the political party they represent
- Describe the main responsibilities the President of the United States has while in office and the role of the team working for them, such as their cabinet and advisors
- Research and describe some of the main historical events that occurred in the 1800s, 1900s, and 2000s
- Identify significant geographical landmarks of the United States
- Explain the symbols of the US flag and state the name of the national anthem
- Identify at least two federal holidays
