ECED 425 Equity, Inclusion, and Individualized Learning Experiences

5 credits
In this course, students examine features of developmentally appropriate practices that create equitable, individualized, and inclusive education in the early years. Students will also analyze observations, plan, and implement modifications, supports, and adaptations to improve children’s learning experiences in collaboration with families and other teachers.  

Prerequisites: ECED 300  and ECED 310  

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Analyze and examine the features and benefits of equitable and inclusive learning experiences for diverse groups of young children
  • Apply research-based, and culturally responsive teaching strategies to design equitable and inclusive learning experiences
  • Design a comprehensive observation documentation plan and process that includes collaboration with families and other teachers
  • Analyze and utilize observation data to design individualized and inclusive learning experiences 
  • Modify materials and activities, add individualized support, and implement teaching strategies that optimize children’s participation in activities
  • Document, discuss and monitor children’s developmental progress with families and other teachers
  • Create individualized curriculum experiences with modifications based on children’s needs and collaborations with families and other staff
  • Investigate the use of technology and adaptive materials to promote equity and inclusion
  • Examine the process for evaluations and services related to transferring from early intervention to public school special education services
