MEDA 221 Clinical Skills: Phlebotomy & Diagnostic Skills

5 credits
An overview of phlebotomy and the role of the phlebotomist in health care. Topics include circulatory system, infection control, clinical laboratory safety, and phlebotomy procedures and equipment. Clinical skills include EKG, spirometry, peak flow, oxygen and CLIA Waived Tests.

Prerequisites: MEDA 115 MEDA 119 , and MEDA 130  

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Demonstrate knowledge of medical asepsis and universal precautions
  • Demonstrate correct technique in performing the required procedures
  • Demonstrate safety procedures in performing phlebotomy 
  • Demonstrate knowledge of medical terminology and anatomy related to the procedures
  • Apply and utilize all required personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Apply and utilize all required infection control measures and medical asepsis
  • Perform capillary specimen collection for PKU testing
  • Perform venipunctures successfully using the evacuated tube method
  • Perform venipunctures successfully using the butterfly/vacutainer method
  • Perform specimen processing for transport
  • Document correctly and appropriately all procedures in the student patient chart
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of lab safety
  • Demonstrate quality control in the laboratory
  • Instruct patients in spirometry, peak flow and EKG’s
  • Explain why we perform spirometry, peak flow and EKG
  • Have knowledge of CLIA Waived Tests
