ART 313 Multicultural History of the Illustrated Image

This course focuses on the historical and cultural development of the illustrated image across diverse cultures. The traditional uses, dissemination, and impact of illustrations across the globe will be explored.

Prerequisites: Admission to the BAS Applied Art - Illustration program

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Summarize historical advancements in illustration and commercial art
  • Assess the balance/imbalance in historical client and customer relationships with illustration 
  • Examine stylistic, cultural, and technical variables for how illustration is conducted across the globe
  • Contrast narrowcasted personal illustrations versus broader broadcast campaigns
  • Develop a historical and sociocultural perspective of illustration informed by contemporary media environment and sensibilities
