ECED 340 Creative Expression

3 credits
In this course, students examine developmentally appropriate curriculum experiences that promote creative expression through art, music, movement, and drama. Students will also evaluate creative experiences and implement strategies for facilitating children’s use of the arts to support creative expression, social interactions, and cultural identity development.

Prerequisites: ECED 300  and ECED 310   

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Examine creative expression in early learning settings, including the benefits and challenges 
  • Evaluate and modify curriculum activities to increase opportunities for creative expression  
  • Apply current research and teaching strategies to promote children’s creative expression through art, music, movement, and drama
  • Design and facilitate opportunities for children to express their thoughts, ideas, and experiences through various forms of creative art media  
  • Integrate creative expression across developmental domains, curriculum content areas, and learning environments
  • Design creative experiences that promote children’s cultural identity development, social interactions, and awareness of diversity
  • Advocate for children’s creative expression in early childhood settings
