MACH 132 Machining Practice: Threading Project and Precision Grinding

8 credits
While making threading projects, students learn to calculate thread measurements, grind threading tools, and set up and cut threads of various pitches. While making precision triangles, students learn heat treating and how to grind perpendicular surfaces within .0002 inch tolerances.

Prerequisites: MACH 110  or instructor permission
Quarters Offered: Fall, Summer

Global Outcome(s)
This course teaches to the global outcome of Critical Thinking.

Student Outcomes/Competencies:
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Grind 60 degree threading tools
  • Calculate screw thread measurement and computations
  • Set up and cut accurate screw threads
  • Use Machinery’s Handbook to find thread formulas
  • Heat treat material
  • Create perpendicular surfaces within .0002 inch on the surface grinder
  • Synthesize information from Machinery’s Handbook, thread-cutting demonstration, and operation of the lathe to create a class 2 thread
  • Comprehend multiple facets, and evaluate and apply same methods to different pitches and pitch diameters of threads
