MACH 120 Materials: Measuring and CNC8 credits Materials study includes the identification and use of different varieties of metals and understanding some of the effects of the different alloying elements within the materials. The class will also include an introduction to grinding which will cover a variety of abrasives, wheels, and applications, along with an understanding of the overall grinding processes. Included will also be instruction on the heat treatment of steel, the safe setup and operation of CNC machines, and an introduction to G-code programing.
Prerequisites: MATH 087 and ABED 046 (or equivalent placement scores for MATH 098 or higher and ENGL 093 or higher) and MACH 110 (pre or corequisite) or instructor permission Quarters Offered: Spring
Global Outcome(s) This course teaches to the global outcome of Intercultural Appreciation.
Student Outcomes/Competencies: Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Understand the grinding wheel identification system
- Determine proper abrasive type for different processes
- Identify metals and other machinable materials
- Identify properties and machinability of exotic metals and plastics
- Heat treat high carbon steels
- Understand theoretical processes of heat treatment
- Demonstrate use of shop math
- Create 2-D programs by way of computer aided machining and hand written G-code.
- Set-up and operate CNC machines
- Demonstrate awareness of international issues affecting contracts and pricing
