APDZ 321 The Business of Design

5 credits
This course provides an overview of business vocabulary, functions, processes, and the design segment for students in the BTAD program. It also addresses aspects of management and leadership, law, contracts, and human resources. Case studies of design businesses are included.

Prerequisites: Admission to the BTAD Program.
Student Outcomes/Competencies:
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Identify major businesses in the design field and describe their evolution as a business
  • Describe the types of businesses that commonly operate in the design industry and identify their unique features
  • Analyze business and employment contracts
  • Read and analyze balance sheets and budgets
  • Describe basic principles of business law and major legislation
  • Distinguish important job skills, create a job description and evaluate the performance of an employee applying relevant business laws
  • Apply business law to case studies of design firms
  • Practice a variety of strategic planning processes
  • Use tools to research additional resources needed for the operation of a business
