The Baccalaureate of Applied Science Funeral Service Education prepares students to become owners, managers, and leaders in an ever-changing funeral service profession. Emphasis is placed on research and continued professional development within the funeral service industry. Students are also prepared to pursue further education (e.g., master’s degree or juris doctorate).

The BAS degree expounds on the curriculum mastered by graduates of ABFSE-accredited associate degree programs. The program is 100% online, designed for working professionals who want to advance their education and careers in the funeral service profession.

Baccalaureate of Applied Science Funeral Service Education graduates will:

• Analyze market economy and its relevance to funeral service operations and decision-making processes
• Execute ethical decisions personally and professionally
• Practice written and verbal empathic communication
• Exercise effective leadership through a variety of strength-based management practices
• Respond to cultural perspectives on death and dying with respect and care
• Utilize the relationship between social media and technology to enhance business relationships and marketing
• Facilitate creation of meaningful memorial practices
• Apply strategies for a long career in funeral service
• Manage employees in an effective manner
• Contribute to public health efforts locally, nationally, and/or globally
• Develop an after-care program and support group
• Investigate current environmental public health issues and topics in environmental health sciences, as well as global health threats 
• Prepare for management of diseases and natural disasters that involve multiple fatalities
• demonstrate critical thinking, intercultural appreciation, teamwork, information literacy, and communication skills

Lake Washington Institute of Technology does not offer every course each quarter. It is the student’s responsibility to consult the Class Schedule and work out an individual schedule with an advisor. Any additional coursework a student may be required to complete may increase the program length.
