The State Early Childhood Education Initial Certificate provides an introduction to the field of early childhood education. This entry level certificate prepares childcare providers for assistant and aide positions in early learning settings. It covers basic topics related to caring for young children and licensing requirements. All of the classes in this certificate apply towards the AAS in Early Childhood Education at LWTech.
State Early Childhood Education Initial Certificate graduates will:
- be able to maintain a safe and healthy environment for children
- be prepared to monitor and make appropriate changes for safety in both the indoor and outdoor learning environment
- be able to plan and monitor a children’s menu following DCYF guidelines
- be prepared to apply learning theory as it relates to children’s play in the learning setting
- be prepared to work as an entry level staff member in an early childhood setting
- be prepared to apply best practices in all interactions with children
It is the student’s responsibility to discuss sequencing and work out their individual schedule with an advisor. Any developmental coursework a student may be required to complete may increase the program length.

Program Requirements
Students should take all four courses in one quarter. If needed, they can also choose to take ECED& 105, ECED& 120, and ABED 066 in the first quarter and ECED& 107 in the second quarter. ECED& 105, ECED& 120, and ABED 066 must be taken together.
