BH 252 Political Advocacy in Health and Human Services

This course introduces students preparing for careers in healthcare and social services to the principles and practices of political advocacy in the United States, with emphasis on Washington State. Students will examine ways to influence those developing laws and policies affecting health and human service systems, access to care, and the well-being of diverse populations. The course highlights the roles of professionals in shaping policy, engaging with legislators and agencies, and building coalitions to advance equity and justice. Students will gain foundational skills for effective advocacy at the local, state, and federal levels.

Prerequisites: ABED 40 or AHSE 56 (or equivalent placement score for MATH 87 or AHSE 66 or higher) and ENGL 93 (or equivalent placement score for ENGL 99 or higher)

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

Describe the role of political advocacy in healthcare and social service professions.
Identify key policymakers in state government shaping health and human service policy.
Apply introductory advocacy strategies, such as joining lobby days, identifying allies, sharing stories, and communicating effectively with elected officials.
