HIST 314 Pacific Northwest History and Contemporary Issues

This course surveys the history of the Pacific Northwest. This includes the areas now making up the states of Washington, Oregon, and Idaho, as well as British Columbia. The course will explore Indigenous nations and communities in the past and present, the fur trade, European exploration and colonization, industrial and commercial development, and the growth of cities like Seattle and Portland.

This course meets the Humanities general education distribution requirement.

Prerequisites: At least 90 credits of 100/200 level coursework completed

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

Describe important ideas, individuals, events, and movements relating to the history of the Pacific Northwest
Relate the history of the Pacific Northwest to wider historical developments in the United States and the world
Examine how different social, cultural, racial, and ethnic groups have shaped the Pacific Northwest
Analyze how the Pacific Northwest’s geographic and environmental landscape have influenced its history
Demonstrate the skills of the historical method, including critical evaluation of both primary and secondary sources
Analyze and articulate cause and effect relationships in the events that have shaped the Pacific Northwest
Demonstrate skills in critical thinking, writing, conducting research, and constructing arguments
Relate contemporary issues in the Pacific Northwest to historical developments
