ADHS 88 Geometry3-5 credits Geometry is a course designed to meet Washington state high school graduation requirements and is aligned with the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics. Throughout this course students will explore geometric transformations using measurement, precision, and symmetry. Problems and practical applications in the course will relate to area and volume, angles, triangles, basic trigonometrical functions, regular polygons and circles. Students must complete 4 of the 6 module topics to earn 3 credits.
Prerequisites: ABED 40 or AHSE 56 (or placement into MATH 87 or AHSE 66 or higher) or CASAS math assessment score of 226 or higher
Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Create physical and/or digital representations of transformations, including rotations, reflections, and stretches
- Explain and use the relationships between complementary and supplementary angles along with the properties of parallel lines to identify missing angles in a system
- Identify cases that do (and do not) establish similarity and congruence for different geometric shapes
- Describe key properties of triangles, squares, rectangles, parallelograms, trapezoids, regular polygons, circles, and basic conic sections
- Apply trigonometric ratios and the Pythagorean theorem to solve applications involving right triangles
- Provide informal arguments for area and volume formulas and apply these formulas in practical applications
- Apply geometric methods to design solutions which satisfy physical constraints or minimize cost
