ADHS 81 Comprehensive Sexual Health Education

This course is designed to provide high school students with a thorough understanding of sexual health, personal safety, relationships, and emotional well-being. Students will explore topics such as human development, contraception, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), consent, healthy relationships, and the role of culture, values, and communication in sexual behavior. The course aims to equip students with the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to make informed decisions about their sexual health and relationships, while fostering respect, empathy, and personal responsibility.

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

Identify stages of human sexual development and puberty
Explain the physical, emotional, and psychological changes that occur during adolescence
Identify various contraceptive methods and their effectiveness
Explain the risks, symptoms, and prevention of sexually transmitted infections (STIs), including HIV/AIDS
Comprehend the reproductive anatomy and the menstrual cycle
Define consent and describe the importance of clear, enthusiastic, and ongoing consent in all sexual interactions
Recognize the characteristics of healthy, respectful relationships and how to set boundaries
Recognize and implement the importance of communication, mutual respect, and emotional safety in relationships
Use critical thinking to evaluate situations and make informed decisions related to sexual health and relationships
Identify peer pressure, media influences, and societal expectations regarding sexuality, and understand their potential impacts on decision-making
Recognize the diversity of sexual orientations, gender identities, and the spectrum of human experiences
Respect differences in sexual expression, gender identity, and relationship preferences
Engage in discussions around the ethical considerations of sexual behavior, such as sexual harassment, abuse, and bullying
Comprehend and explore the role of consent laws, legal rights related to sexual activity, and the implications of age of consent in various jurisdictions
Recognize the emotional aspects of sexual health, including the impact of sexual activity on mental well-being
Describe resources for mental health support, sexual health counseling, and how to seek help when needed
