BH 223 Suicide Risk Assessment

This class provides an introduction to suicide assessment and prevention. Students will be introduced to topics such as signs and symptoms of suicidal/self-harm behavior, facts and myths about suicidal behavior, conducting an assessment interview, risk factors and protective factors, the treatment of suicidal individuals, the contagion effect, and self-care for those working with suicidal/self-harm individuals.

Prerequisites: ABED 40 or AHSE 56 (or equivalent placement score for MATH 87 or AHSE 66 or higher) and ENGL 93 (or equivalent placement score for ENGL 99 or higher)

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

Describe the prevalence of suicide
Conduct an assessment interview
Appraise risk factors and protective factors
Coordinate services and refer patients to care
Attend to their own self-care when working with suicidal individuals
