CMST 300 Professional Communication

5 credits


This course focuses on interpersonal communication skills, small group communication, and public speaking required for the professional workplace setting. Key topics include listening skills, conflict resolution, nonverbal communication, cultural competencies, and the impact of electronic and social media. Written as well as verbal communication skills are practiced. Students will relate skills and coursework to their respective jobs and career goals.

This course meets the Humanities  general education distribution requirement.

Prerequisites: At least 90 credits of 100/200 level coursework completed.

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Analyze the benefits and disadvantages of various communication channels, then choose and design professional messages accordingly
  • Analyze and apply the best listening approaches in a given situation to promote understanding, accomplish goals, and enhance relationships with others
  • Examine different approaches for negotiating solutions in work-related conflicts and predict likely outcomes of using each approach
  • Analyze the culture and co-cultures in a specific organization and describe how their norms and values shape communication in the workplace
  • Demonstrate the types of language and nonverbal communication that will be most effective within a specific organizational culture
  • Explain the communication required of leaders and members to produce an effective meeting and to transform a group of people into an effective team
  • Design and deliver effective, organized, and professional public presentations on work-related topics
