DSGN 290 Professional Practice5 credits This is a practical course designed to equip students with the skills and knowledge necessary to successfully navigate the job market in the design industry. This course covers essential topics such as building a compelling portfolio, crafting a personal narrative, and understanding business fundamentals relevant to creatives. By the end of the course, students will have a polished portfolio, enhanced presentation skills, a clear personal narrative, and a solid understanding of the business aspects of a design career, positioning them for success in their job search and future professional endeavors.
Prerequisites: (DSGN 102 or ART 102 ) and DSGN 117 (pre or co-requisites)
Course Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Create and refine a portfolio that showcases their best work, demonstrates design skills, and effectively communicates their personal style and design approach
- Gain techniques for presenting their work confidently and professionally in interviews, client meetings, and networking events, including strategies for effective storytelling and visual communication
- Develop a compelling personal narrative that highlights their unique experiences, design philosophy, and career aspirations, tailored to resonate with potential employers and clients
- Explore key business concepts relevant to designers, including contract negotiations, pricing strategies, and self-promotion, to navigate the professional landscape effectively
