ART 200 Global Modern Art History5 credits This course focuses on studying global artists from WWII to the present day. Artists and artworks will include a range of two-dimensional, three-dimensional, and architectural works. Students will develop their understanding of contextual frameworks that inform global art practice through lectures, seminars, tutorials, and museum visits. This course supports students in developing the ability to research and understand art practices within a contemporary and historical cultural context.
Prerequisites: Completion of ABED 40 or AHSE 56 (or placement into MATH 87 or AHSE 66 or higher) and ABED 46 or ELL 50 (or placement into ENGL 93 or higher)
Program Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Examine key art movements from 1939 to present day
- Explore artists as both individuals and social agents, analyzing how artists reflect and challenge cultural narratives through their work
- Analyze how globalization has influenced modern and contemporary art
- Examine the intersectionality of social identities in modern and contemporary art
- Evaluate the role of technology, digital media, and performance in modern and contemporary art practices
