DAS 103 Clinical Externship I4 credits This course is designed for the student to experience chairside assisting in a general practice dental office. Students may begin with observation but will spend the majority of their time in direct patient care. Students will apply knowledge and skills they acquire during didactic portion of the program to clinical settings.
Prerequisites: ABED 40 (or placement into MATH 87 or higher) and ABED 46 (or placement into ENGL 93 or higher)
Corequisites: DAS 101 and DAS 102
Course Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Apply concepts of four-handed dentistry in a clinical setting.
- Identify dental instruments and demonstrate instrument transfer.
- Apply aseptic techniques and implement proper infection control procedures.
- Assemble tray setups for various procedures.
- Demonstrate competency in working with dental restorative materials.
- Demonstrate competency in working with impression materials.
- Demonstrate skills in the proper use of the x-ray machine and processing radiographic images.
- Implement patient management skills.
- Maintain communication among personnel in the dental office.
- Recognize ethical and legal responsibilities in the dental environment.
