LASR 211 Advanced Topics in Imaging and Remote Sensing

3 credits
This course is a continuation of LASR 204 Communication, Imaging, and Remote Sensing . This course provides an in-depth understanding, aligned with intensive practice, of industry-standard imaging and remote-sensing systems. The operation, installation, calibration, troubleshooting, and repair of forward-looking-infrared systems (FLIR) and LIDAR are introduced. Students also practice image processing to be able to use devices to enhance logistics and control issues in a safe and reliable manner.

Prerequisites: LASR 204  

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Review and describe optical systems and test specifications for remote sensing applications
  • Develop optical system requirements for specific applications that include required laser power, detector bandwidth and sensitivity, and acceptable SNR
  • Determine image resolution requirements and limitations per technical specifications
  • Evaluate system requirements in terms of the physical and electrical requirements of a given power supply
  • Compare alternative imaging and remote sensing techniques
  • Use optical software to build a system model and predict expected performance
  • Identify and select images to be processed as live, print, picture, or copy
  • Incorporate and set up a selected data-acquisition method to capture/obtain digital images/data of experiment
  • Edit digital images for color correction, size, crop, orientation, and other requirements using image processing software according to requirements
  • Organize and prepare documents, digital files, and reports as needed
  • Ensure appropriate safety procedures (eye safety, burn safety, etc.) in accordance with ANSI and OSHA standards
