MEDA 140 Medical Reimbursement Systems5 credits A review of various types of health insurance plans, such as state, federal, and managed care. Students will learn the insurance claims processing cycle, billing systems, and required documentation. Students will have the opportunity to apply their knowledge in a laboratory setting utilizing billing software.
Prerequisites: MEDA 136
Course Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Apply knowledge of basic insurance terminology, phrases, and abbreviations
- Correctly code insurance billing forms using ICD10-CM and CPT code
- Perform accounts receivable procedures to patient accounts including posting charges, payments, and adjustments
- Obtain accurate patient billing information
- Verify eligibility for services including documentation
- Obtain precertification or preauthorization including documentation
- Complete an insurance claim form
- Outline managed care requirements for patient referral

- be prepared to pass the CMA (AAMA) exam
