MEDA 139 Assist with Exam and Administer Medications5 credits Intermediate clinical skills including infection control, sterilization and disinfection techniques, minor surgery assisting, wound care, administration of injections, safety practices for administering medications, therapeutic modalities, and eye and ear procedures will be taught.
Prerequisites: MEDA 116 , MEDA 118 , and MATH 87 (or placement into MATH 98 or higher)
Course Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Identify principles and procedures of medication and vaccine administration and systems of measurement
- Calculate and administer oral and parenteral medications accurately and safely, as directed by the physician
- Use proper terminology and documentation of procedures and medications in the patient chart
- Prepare patient for and assist with specialty procedures and treatments
- Identify, set up, and assist in minor surgical procedures; identify and respond appropriately to patients’ needs
- Maintain medical asepsis and sterilization
- Correctly use and care for medical surgical equipment and instruments
- Perform within the scope of training and education for a medical assistant
- Educate patients in the methods of health promotion and disease prevention
Program Outcomes This course teaches to the following program outcomes:
- be prepared to obtain an entry-level position in their field
- be prepared to work in ambulatory settings performing administrative and clinical duties.
- meet CAAHEP Standards in the areas of cognitive and psychomotor skills
- be prepared to pass the CMA (AAMA) exam
