FSE 251 Embalming I

3 credits
A survey of the process of chemically treating human remains to reduce the presence and growth of microorganisms to temporarily inhibit organic decomposition, and to restore an acceptable physical appearance. The subject includes the study of death of the human body, government regulations applicable to the embalming process, embalming analysis and reports, instrumentation, and various conditions encountered with human remains.

Prerequisites: BIOL& 175  and FSE 103   

Corequisites: FSE 255  

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Explain the concepts of disinfection, temporary preservation, and restoration of  human remains
  • Evaluate how the handling, treatment, and disposition of human remains meets  sociological, psychological, ethical, and regulatory requirements
  • Differentiate between the various professional agencies and their responsibilities with  respect to human remains
  • Demonstrate and describe the use of embalming instruments, equipment and supplies
  • Assess the general principles and use of embalming chemicals and summarize their components
  • Demonstrate and explain safe work practices concerning exposure to bloodborne pathogens and hazardous chemicals
  • Analyze anatomical considerations for injection point selection
  • Describe how the vascular system is used to distribute embalming chemicals to the tissues of the body
  • Analyze body conditions that will affect the choice of various embalming techniques  and the implementation of the proper procedures
  • Explain the need and apply proper procedures for cavity treatment
  • Complete all documentation associated with the care and preparation of human  remains
  • Describe the preparation of unembalmed remains for identification viewing and removal of medical devices for disposition
  • Integrate information from the studies of microbiology, pathology, anatomy, chemistry, and restorative art

  • Apply principles of public health and safety in the handling and preparation of human remains
  • Demonstrate technical skills in embalming and restorative art that are necessary for the preparation and handling of human remains
  • Demonstrate verbal and written communication skills and research skills needed for funeral service practice
