MACH 119 Turning Operation

5 credits
Students will learn how to safely operate a 2 axis lathe. They will maintain acceptable tolerances of completed parts, manage coolant, keep a clean and organized workspace, read and write tie-in and setup sheets, use SPC, troubleshoot error codes and use various basic machine functions.

Prerequisites: ABED 046  (or placement into ENGL 093  or higher) and MATH 087  (or placement into MATH 098  or higher)

Corequisites: MACH 117  

Course Outcomes
Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:

  • Maintain a safe working environment
  • Troubleshoot turning error messages
  • Monitor coolant levels
  • Dry-run of proven programs
  • Set tool length offsets
  • Edit cutter compensation
  • Change out parts using various milling fixtures
  • Utilize various G-Code commands in MDI mode to achieve various CNC functions/actions
  • Inspect finished parts for size and quality
  • Set and check fixture offsets
  • Apply safe use of hand-jog mode on CNC machine
  • Solve basic angular calculations using right-angle trigonometry for machinists
  • Plan, develop, document, and improve machining processes
