MACH 119 Turning Operation5 credits Students will learn how to safely operate a 2 axis lathe. They will maintain acceptable tolerances of completed parts, manage coolant, keep a clean and organized workspace, read and write tie-in and setup sheets, use SPC, troubleshoot error codes and use various basic machine functions.
Prerequisites: ABED 046 (or placement into ENGL 093 or higher) and MATH 087 (or placement into MATH 098 or higher)
Corequisites: MACH 117
Course Outcomes Upon successful completion of this course students will be able to:
- Maintain a safe working environment
- Troubleshoot turning error messages
- Monitor coolant levels
- Dry-run of proven programs
- Set tool length offsets
- Edit cutter compensation
- Change out parts using various milling fixtures
- Utilize various G-Code commands in MDI mode to achieve various CNC functions/actions
- Inspect finished parts for size and quality
- Set and check fixture offsets
- Apply safe use of hand-jog mode on CNC machine
- Solve basic angular calculations using right-angle trigonometry for machinists
- Plan, develop, document, and improve machining processes
